Manganese dioxide was one of the earliest natural substances used by humans. It was used as a pigment and paint for body painting and cave painting. It occurs naturally as the black mineral pyrolusite.

- A pigment in ceramics and glass making.
- A laboratory reagent in organic synthesis.
- A precurser for other manganese compounds.
