Our activated charcoal is pharmaceutical grade, BPC stands for “The British Pharmaceutical Codex” which defines the quality and specification of the activated charcoal. The correct chemical term for this grade of material is activated carbon. This activated charcoal is produced from coconut shells which has been purified for use as a pharmaceutical active ingredient.
The charcoal is a finely reduced powder (5–10 microns), which presents a huge surface area for the absorption of substances, 1g of activated charcoal has a surface area of 1000 meters sq. which is the size of four tennis courts. Larger particles, 1–2mm in size, of activated charcoal have a much lower surface area, they may be easier to handle, however due the lower surface area they will not act as fast or be as effective. If you take activated charcoal orally, it is essential you use a highly refined pharmaceutical grade of the material, as products marketed as other products marketed as activated charcoal or charcoal may not be produced from the same quality of material and may contain harmful impurities.
WHAT IS ACTIVATED CHARCOAL
Activated charcoal ( also known as activated carbon ) is carbon that has been treated with oxygen. This process results in a highly porous charcoal. Because of this porosity at a microscopic level 1 gram of the activated charcoal has a surface area in excess of 1000 sq metres. It is these micropores that allow the carbon to adsorb gases, liquids and solids filtering out contaminants, poisons, toxins and impurities. Adsorption is the chemical attraction a surface exhibits on molecules which pass over the surface. The molecules bond to the surface without chemically changing the actual surface. It must be noted that not all molecules are adsorbed by activated charcoal and these simply pass through the medium and are not filtered out.
Above you can see the activated charcoal as it appears to the naked eye and beside this is a photograph of the activated carbon as seen through an electron microscope.
WHERE IS ACTIVATED CHARCOAL USED
Activated charcoal has many applications from water and air purification, to industrial, agricultural and medical uses.
The main Industrial applications are:
Air filters & respirators
Odour control
Drinking Water Treatment
Effluent treatment
Swimming pool treatment
Pond and aquarium water purification
Purification of food and beverages
Pharmaceutical purification
Metal recovery
Gas purification
The main Medical applications are:
As an antidote for chemical poisoning
To relieve painful pressure caused by excess gas in the stomach and intestines,
diarrhea, and indigestion.
To relieve itching associated with kidney dialysis treatment
To treat overdoses of other medicines.
Cleansing the body of drugs and intoxicants
Treatment of bites and stings
Treatment of skin infections and ulcers
Treatment of itchy skin
Reducing cholesterol, coronary disease and arteriosclerosis.
Anti-aging
Helps to fight against flu and other viruses
Removes tartar and plaque build-up when used as toothpaste
HOW DOES ACTIVATED CHARCOAL WORK WHEN TAKEN INTERNALLY
When activated charcoal is taken internally it acts as an antidote and treatment by binding drugs and poisons within the gastrointestinal tract. This allows their transfer out of the body in a harmless form. Charcoal absorbs like a sponge, and renders poisons harmless and prevents them being absorbed into the bloodstream. It can do varied tasks because of it’s amazing ability to attract other substances to its surface and hold on to them until they exit the body.
Studies show that activated charcoal is harmless when ingested or inhaled or when it comes in contact with the skin. In rare cases, charcoal may mildly irritate the bowel in sensitive persons, but no allergies or other side effects have been recorded. It can be very slightly constipating. It is advisable that elderly persons and pregnant women should avoid using activated charcoal.
HOW TO TAKE ACTIVATED CHARCOAL INTERNALLY
Some general suggestions for drinking activated charcoal. Prepare as a slurry by mixing 1 level teaspoon of powder in a glass of clean pure water:
For minor illnesses or just for general good health – 1 teaspoon in a glass of water. Take 1–3 glasses per day.
For general illnesses (flu, indigestion, diarrhoea etc) – take 4–7 glasses per day
For serious illnesses – Take 8 – 12 glasses per day
USING ACTIVATED CHARCOAL ON THE SKIN
Externally, charcoal has been found to be effective for itchy skin, infections, gangrenous ulcers, insect bites and stings. Charcoal poultices draw toxins and poisons out through the skin tissue. To make a poultice mix equal parts of the charcoal with clay like calcium bentonite and add water until a paste is produced. In order for the poultice to remain effective it must be kept moist. Do not put charcoal directly in an open wound.
ACTIVATED CHARCOAL FOR WATER PURIFICATION
Charcoal is used in many kinds of water filters to purify drinking water. It adsorbs chlorine, and many other harmful chemicals. For contaminated water charcoal adsorbs diphtheria, tetanus, dysentery and many other bacteria that cause human health problems.
ACTIVATED CHARCOAL FOR AIR PURIFICATION
Activated carbon is currently the most simple and effective method for the removal of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) from the air and other gases. This allows compounds to be reduced to acceptable environmental levels based on air quality regulations. Charcoal is also used to purify and deodorise foul gases evolving from sewage works and effluent treatment. It effectively removes hydrogen sulphide, sulphur dioxide and mercaptans. Output gases from industrial chimneys, incinerators, burn houses, crematoriums etc can be safely treated using activated charcoal to remove hazardous and toxic gases, heavy metals and particulates.
NOTE: Activated charcoal does not bind all agents. Alcohol, petroleum products, corrosive acids and bases, fluoride, cyanide and metals such as iron and lithium are exceptions since activated charcoal cannot adsorb them efficiently. In these cases, administering activated charcoal is of no use.
