PROPERTIES OF NITRIC ACID:
A colourless poisonous liquid, nitric acid is used in the manufacture of plastics, dyes and fertilizers. It is also used as a reagent in scientific laboratories. Nitric acid is a highly corrosive and strong acid that can cause severe burns. It's chemical formula is HNO3.
It was called aquis fortis – strong water by the alchemists, a name by which it continued to be known commercially. In air, nitric acid (HNO3) fumes and turns yellow due to its decomposition into nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Nitric acid is highly corrosive and a powerful oxidising agent. It reacts with most metals, resulting in the formation of nitrate salts.
USES OF NITRIC ACID:
- Laboratory reagent
- For gold purification and extraction
- Manufacture of fertilisers
- Etching and dissolution of metals
- Artificial aging of wood (pine and maple)
- As an oxidiser
- Cleaning equipment in conjunction with phosphoric acid.
- Used in organic synthesis
- Nitration of aromatic compounds in conjunction with sulphuric acid.
- Metal cleaning.
