Reverse osmosis membranes and watermakers
Sodium Metabisulphite is used as a Reverse osmosis membrane preservative, system sterilizing agent and pickling reagent. The preservative allows a watermaker to sit unused for sever days (referred to as “pickled”) without the risk of biological growth fouling of the membranes and pre-filter elements. The solution of pickle is made by dissolving 10g of metabisulphite per litre of water so if the pickling bucket is 15L you will need 150g of powder. After pickling the system should be circulated for 45 minutes with sea water before filling tank.
