TRIETHANOLAMINE

Technical Grade

Triethanolamine (TEA) is a viscous, organic chemical compound that acts as a strong base. It is an amine and alcohol compound with the chemical formula C₆H₁₅NO₃, and is commonly used in various applications due to its alkaline properties and its ability to act as a surfactant and emulsifier.

Key Properties of Triethanolamine

  • Chemical Formula: C₆H₁₅NO₃
  • Appearance: Clear, colorless to pale yellow, viscous liquid
  • Odour: Mild ammonia-like smell
  • Solubility: Highly soluble in water and alcohols

Common Uses of Triethanolamine

  1. Emulsifier:

    • Triethanolamine is widely used in cosmetics and personal care products, such as lotions and creams, as an emulsifier. It helps to blend and stabilize oil and water-based ingredients, ensuring a consistent and smooth texture.
  2. pH Adjuster:

    • TEA is often added to products to adjust the pH level. In personal care and cosmetic formulations, it helps neutralize fatty acids, creating a stable product with the desired pH balance.
  3. Surfactant:

    • In cleaning products, TEA acts as a surfactant, which helps to break down oils and grease, making it easier for water to wash away dirt. It’s commonly found in household and industrial cleaners, laundry detergents, and soaps.
  4. Buffering Agent:

    • Triethanolamine is used in pharmaceuticals as a buffering agent to maintain the stability and effectiveness of the active ingredients over time.
  5. Corrosion Inhibitor:

    • TEA is used in various metalworking fluids, lubricants, and other industrial applications as a corrosion inhibitor, helping to protect metal surfaces from rust and degradation.
    • A common use of TEA is as a complexing agent for aluminium ions in aqueous solutions.
  6. Textile and Leather Processing:

    • In the textile industry, triethanolamine is used in dyeing and finishing processes. It assists in ensuring even dyeing and prevents fading. In leather processing, it is used for pH control and conditioning.
  7.  Photography: TEA has been used in photographic (silver halide) processing and has been recommended as a useful alkali by amateur photographers
