FERRIC OXIDE

Iron(III) oxide or ferric oxide is of one of the three main oxides of iron. the other two being iron (II) oxide (FeO), and iron (II III) oxide (Fe3O4). As the mineral known as hematite Fe2O3 is the main source of the iron for the steel industry. Fe2O3 is paramagnetic, reddish brown, and readily attacked by acids. Rust is often called iron(III) oxide.

 

Uses for Ferric Oxide / Red Iron Oxide:

  • In the iron and steel industry it is used to make steel and alloys.
  • A pigment in ceramics to produce glazes.
  • Jewellers rouge or red rouge.
  • A fine polish for jewellery and lenses.
  • Pigments (pigment brown 6, pigment brown 7 and pigment red 101).
  • Used in the thermite reaction.
