Technical grade

A very common detergent / surfactant which is found in many personal care products including soaps, shampoos, lotions etc. It is also used in washing up liquids, providing detergency and excellent stable foam. Other uses include general cleaners and degreasers, vehicle washes , thickening agent for thick bleaches and dry foam carpet cleaners. It is an anionic surfactant, which means it carries a negative charge when dissolved in water, helping it to remove dirt and oils effectively.

Key Properties:

  • Chemical Structure: SLES is derived from ethoxylated lauryl alcohol (usually from coconut or palm kernel oil) and sulfur trioxide (or sulfuric acid). It has a hydrophilic (water-attracting) sulfate group and a hydrophobic (oil-attracting) alkyl chain.
  • Physical Form: It typically appears as a clear or pale yellow liquid.
  • Molecular Formula: C₁₂H₂₅O(C₂H₄O)ₙSO₃Na (where "n" represents the number of ethylene oxide units, usually 1-3).
