USES FOR PROPYLENE GLYCOL:
- For use in solar boilers / heaters as a heat transfer fluid. To use dilute the propylene glycol 1:1 with water.
- Non-toxic antifreeze in breweries and dairies;
- Substitute for ethylene glycol and glycerol
- Manufacture of synthetic resins.
- Added to foods as a humefactant or solvent for artificial colouring or flavouring agents.
- Is a component of cosmetic preparations.
- Treatment of hyperkeratosis – A 50% solution is used to bathe the skin.
- Solvent in many pharmaceuticals, including oral, injectable or topical formulations.
- Many oral and parenteral drug preparations contain propylene glycol in significant amounts as a solvent:
- Propylene glycol is used in making polyester compounds and as a solvent in the paint and plastics industries.
- It is used to create artificial smoke or fog for theatrical uses.
- Used as a carrier for nicotine in electronic cigarettes and as a vaporizable base for diluting the nicotine liquid
- To regulate humidity in a cigar humidor.

MPG is an important solvent in the flavor concentrate industry, enabling manufacturers to produce low-cost flavour concentrates of high quality. It is also an excellent wetting agent for natural gums, greatly simplifying the compounding of citrus and other emulsified flavors. Our PG USP/EP finds additional use as a solvent in elixirs and pharmaceutical preparations containing water-soluble ingredients, and as a solvent and coupling agent in the formulation of sun screen lotion, shampoos, shaving creams and other similar products.
How to use propylene glycol to make a lava lamp:
The original formula for making lava lamps recommends using propylene glycol at a ratio of 30:70 with water. The lava is simply a mineral oil which floats through the glycol solution after being heated with a 40W bulb
DEPRESSION OF FREEZING POINT OF WATER:
Propylene glycol is a component in newer automotive antifreezes and de-icers used at airports. Like ethylene glycol (MEG), the freezing point of propylene glycol is depressed when mixed with water due to disruption of hydrogen bonding. Unlike ethylene glycol, propylene glycol is much lower in toxicity. It is readily biodegradable.
